Courses offer a wide variety of literature from different historical periods, literary genres, and English-speaking cultures. They also offer a wide variety of critical viewpoints and interpretive strategies.
The Department offers majors and minors in English and in English and Creative Writing. In addition, it is the anchor of the Film Studies minor at Sweet Briar.
Our courses in Shakespeare and modern drama contribute to the major in Theatre Arts. We also encourage other interdisciplinary studies, and contribute to the Honors Program and the Women and Gender Studies minor.
