Courses offer a wide variety of literature from different historical periods, literary genres, and English-speaking cultures. They also offer a wide variety of critical viewpoints and interpretive strategies.
The Department offers majors and minors in English and in English/Creative Writing. In addition, it is the anchor of the Film Studies program at Sweet Briar.
Many of our courses in drama contribute to the major in Theatre Arts. We also encourage other interdisciplinary studies, and contribute to the Honors Program, the Gender Studies minor, and the Medieval and Renaissance Studies minor.
