Graduate School Information
Students considering a graduate program in English should confer with the chair of the department to be sure that she has planned an appropriate curriculum. Since most graduate schools require two modern languages and some require a classical language as well, the student should have a reading knowledge of at least one foreign language by the time of her graduation from Sweet Briar. Most graduate programs also presuppose some knowledge of literary theory, the student is also advised to choose ENGL 302, Ways of Reading , as one of her three required electives within the major.
Highly recommended for students interested in graduate programs in English and/or other modern languages is the new online Guide to Doctoral Programs compiled by the Modern Languages Association. The Real Guide to Graduate School, on reserve in the Library, the Getting into Graduate School site, and the National Academic Advising Association's site are also recommended.
Students interested in MFA programs should consult the AWP Directory of Creative Writing Programs on reserve in the Library and should contact Professor Brown, Director of the Creative Writing Program. For all further information, see Professor Salotto, the Department Chair.
The Office of Career Services is also another great resource for finding graduate program information.
