"For the reading of these books seems to perform a curious couching operation on the senses; one sees more intensely afterwards; the world seems bared of its covering and given an intenser life." – from Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own |

We at SBC's English Department believe that the insights derived from reading and writing are as invaluable to students in the natural and social sciences as they are to those in the humanities.
Not only do English courses introduce students to new books, authors, genres, and perspectives, they provide them with skills that are much needed at the workplace and in the global community: analytical thinking, effective communication skills, historical perspective, and cultural awareness.
The Department offers majors and minors in English and in English and Creative Writing. In addition, it is the anchor of the Film Studies minor at Sweet Briar.
